Anti-Static Foam Shippers for Compatible Electronic Components

Anti-static foam shippers combine a corrugated outer carton with pink foam intended to reduce charge generation around compatible electronic components while providing cushioning. Size the cavity to control movement without overstressing the item, and treat the shipper as one element of an ESD control program—not as automatic electrostatic shielding.

Fit the Product Without Defeating the Cushioning

Measure the device and account for connectors, leads, boards and protrusions that should not bear concentrated foam pressure. The cavity should stabilize the product while preserving the foam’s working thickness. Excess room permits movement; excessive compression may load fragile features and reduce the cushioning response. Use dividers or additional components only when documented as compatible.

For a bag format that provides documented static shielding, compare static shielding bags. Anti-static material primarily addresses charge generation and is not the same as a barrier against an external electrostatic discharge.

Build the Shipper Into the ESD Process

Determine the sensitivity of the device and the protection level required from workstation through unpacking. Review product-specific electrical properties, conditioning, shelf-life or handling guidance rather than relying on pink color alone. Grounding, personnel controls, protected work areas and proper handling remain separate parts of the ESD plan.

Assemble the carton and foam in the intended orientation, keep the product from contacting unprotected surfaces and close the outer carton for the distribution cycle. Validate cushioning and ESD performance with the actual item and route. Replace foam that is contaminated, damaged or outside its documented useful conditions; appearance does not prove continued performance.

Anti-Static Foam Shippers FAQs

Is anti-static foam the same as static shielding?

No. Anti-static material reduces charge generation; shielding requires a documented barrier construction.

How tightly should the foam fit?

It should control movement without applying damaging pressure or eliminating the required cushioning thickness.

Does pink color prove electrical performance?

No. Confirm the exact material documentation and requirements of the ESD control plan.

Do I still need ESD handling controls?

Yes. Packaging complements rather than replaces grounded workstations, personnel controls and proper procedures.
