Loose Fill for Fast, Flexible Carton Cushioning

Loose fill surrounds irregular products, occupies open carton space and helps keep packed items away from the box walls. The best system combines the right fill material with a practical dispenser, enough cushioning depth and a carton sized closely enough to prevent excessive material use.

Compare Materials and Equipment

Choice What makes it useful Check before buying
Standard polystyrene fill Lightweight, resilient and suited to general shipping Static sensitivity and disposal practices
Anti-static polystyrene fill Reduces static generation compared with ordinary fill Required electrical properties and protection duration
Starch-based fill Plant-starch construction with different end-of-life options Humidity exposure, storage and local disposal guidance
Overhead dispenser Stores bulk fill above the bench and meters it at the carton Capacity, ceiling clearance, mounting and hose reach

Pack for Cushioning Depth, Not Just Empty Space

Start with a layer beneath the product, center the item away from all carton walls and pour fill around every side. Add material above the product so the closed flaps apply light restraint without crushing the contents. A quick movement check can reveal an underfilled corner, but a shipping trial is more meaningful for fragile, heavy or high-value goods.

Loose fill can migrate or settle, especially around dense products and during repeated vibration. Use a well-fitted carton and enough depth to account for that movement. Very heavy, sharp or fragile items may need engineered foam, paper cushioning, corner blocks or another structure that holds its position more predictably.

Treat anti-static fill as one part of an ESD-control plan, not as static shielding. For starch-based products, confirm the supplier's disposal instructions and the options available locally; plant-based content does not by itself establish compostability in every program.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much loose fill should I use?

Use enough to maintain cushioning beneath and around the product and to apply light restraint when the carton closes.

Is loose fill suitable for heavy products?

It can settle or migrate under heavy loads, so a fixed or structured cushioning design may be more reliable.

Does anti-static loose fill provide static shielding?

No. Anti-static behavior reduces charge generation; shielding requires a separately specified protective enclosure.

When is a loose-fill dispenser worthwhile?

It is useful when frequent packing makes floor-level bags awkward and overhead storage can improve material flow at the bench.

Need a More Efficient Loose-Fill System?

We can help match fill material, cushioning depth and dispensing equipment to your shipping operation.
