Advanced Protection: Specialty Poly Bag Types

Packaging HERO® offers specialty poly bags designed for applications that require more than basic product containment. Available options provide targeted protection against concerns such as corrosion, ultraviolet light, moisture, static electricity, contamination, and handling.

Because each bag construction serves a different purpose, selecting the correct material is important. Consider the packaged product, environmental exposure, storage period, closure requirements, and applicable industry specifications before choosing a specialty bag.

VCI Poly Bags

VCI bags contain vapor corrosion inhibitors that help protect compatible metal parts from rust and corrosion during shipping and storage. They also provide a barrier against dust and moisture without requiring metal components to be coated with oil or grease.

  • Standard VCI Bags: Provide corrosion protection for compatible metal parts in an enclosed package.
  • VCI Reclosable Bags: Combine corrosion protection with a zipper-style closure for applications requiring convenient access to the contents.

VCI formulations may be intended for particular types of metal. Confirm compatibility with the metal, storage conditions, and required protection period before use.

Amber UV-Protection Bags

Amber poly bags help protect light-sensitive products from ultraviolet exposure. The distinctive amber color also makes these bags easy to identify within inventory and production environments.

Review the individual product specifications to confirm the level of UV protection and whether the bag is suitable for the product’s sensitivity and anticipated exposure.

Moisture-Barrier Bags

Moisture-barrier bags are designed for electronic components and other sensitive products that require protection from humidity and moisture exposure. Available constructions may also provide static-control properties for use within an appropriate protective-packaging system.

Moisture protection depends on the bag construction, closure method, storage environment, and length of exposure. Review the moisture-vapor transmission and static-control specifications for the individual product.

Polypropylene Bags

Polypropylene bags provide excellent clarity for retail presentation and product identification. Available in multiple styles, qualifying polypropylene bags meet FDA and USDA specifications for food-contact applications.

Food-contact suitability can vary by product. Confirm the specifications of the individual bag before using it for direct food packaging.

Additional Specialty Bag Styles

  • Suffocation-Warning Bags: Feature preprinted safety messaging to communicate the potential hazard posed by flexible plastic packaging.
  • MiniGrip® Bags: Provide a dependable zipper-style closure for organizing, protecting, and repeatedly accessing packaged contents.
  • Doorknob Bags: Include an opening designed for hanging literature, samples, notices, or promotional materials from compatible door hardware.

Specialty Poly Bags for Diverse Industry Needs

Specialty poly bags support applications across electronics, manufacturing, metalworking, food packaging, retail, distribution, and fulfillment. Matching the protective properties of the bag to the product helps avoid using packaging that is inadequate or unnecessarily complex.

Electronic Component Protection

Static-sensitive electronic components may require anti-static, static-shielding, or moisture-barrier packaging. These terms describe different levels and types of protection:

  • Anti-Static Bags: Help reduce the generation and buildup of static electricity on the packaging surface.
  • Static-Shielding Bags: Provide a protective barrier that helps shield sensitive electronic devices from external electrostatic-discharge events.
  • Moisture-Barrier Bags: Help limit moisture exposure and may include static-control properties for sensitive components.

Anti-static packaging does not provide the same protection as static-shielding packaging. Select the bag based on the sensitivity of the component and the requirements of the complete ESD-control program.

Metal Parts and Corrosion Protection

VCI bags are intended for compatible metal parts that may be exposed to corrosion during storage or transportation. Standard bags work well for products that will remain enclosed, while reclosable VCI bags provide easier access when parts must be inspected or removed.

Food and Retail Packaging

High-clarity polypropylene bags provide visible product presentation for food, retail, and display applications. Select only products whose specifications confirm suitability for the intended type of food contact.

Choosing the Right Specialty Poly Bag

  • For Compatible Metal Parts: Choose VCI bags or VCI reclosable bags.
  • For Light-Sensitive Products: Consider amber UV-protection bags.
  • For Moisture-Sensitive Components: Review moisture-barrier bag specifications.
  • For Static-Sensitive Electronics: Determine whether anti-static or static-shielding protection is required.
  • For Food Contact: Select a bag specifically identified as meeting the applicable FDA and USDA specifications.
  • For Repeated Access: Choose an appropriate zipper-style reclosable bag.
  • For Safety Messaging: Consider preprinted suffocation-warning bags where required or appropriate.
