Choosing the Right Poly Tubing Mil Thickness

Poly tubing allows businesses to create custom-length bags without stocking numerous individual bag sizes. Simply cut the tubing to the required length, insert the product, and heat-seal both ends using compatible impulse-sealing equipment.

Mil thickness refers to the thickness of the polyethylene film, with one mil equal to one-thousandth of an inch. As the mil thickness increases, the tubing generally provides greater strength, puncture resistance, and durability.

Poly Tubing Thickness Guide

  • 1.5 Mil: A lightweight and economical option for soft, lightweight products that require basic protection from dust, moisture, and handling.
  • 2 Mil: Suitable for many general-purpose packaging applications involving light- to medium-weight products.
  • 3 Mil: Provides additional strength for medium-weight products and applications requiring greater durability than standard lightweight tubing.
  • 4 Mil: Offers increased puncture and tear resistance for heavier products, irregular shapes, and more demanding storage or shipping conditions.
  • 6 Mil: A heavy-duty option for industrial products, heavier components, and applications requiring greater strength and puncture resistance.

Choose a mil thickness based on the product’s weight, shape, edges, fragility, and expected handling conditions. Sharp corners or projecting parts may require edge protection or additional cushioning even when thicker tubing is used.

How to Select the Correct Tubing Width

Measure around the widest portion of the product and allow enough additional room for easy loading without stretching the film. The tubing should lie flat enough at both ends to create complete heat seals.

Poly tubing is available in widths ranging from narrow sizes for small components to wide rolls for larger products. Roll length generally decreases as the film becomes thicker.



Understanding Poly Tubing Colors and Special Properties

Clear Poly Tubing

Clear poly tubing is the most versatile option and allows packaged products to remain visible. It is available in multiple widths and thicknesses for general packaging, storage, organization, and shipping applications.

Pink Anti-Static Poly Tubing

Pink anti-static poly tubing is designed to help prevent static electricity from building up on the surface of the packaging. It can be cut and sealed to create custom-length bags for static-sensitive components used within an appropriate ESD-controlled environment.

Important: Pink anti-static tubing helps reduce static generation but does not provide the same protection from external electrostatic discharge as metalized static-shielding packaging. Use static-shielding material when the application requires protection from external ESD events.

Blue VCI Poly Tubing

Blue VCI poly tubing is made from polyethylene film embedded with a vapor corrosion inhibitor. It helps protect compatible metal parts from rust and corrosion during shipping and storage without requiring the parts to be coated with oil or grease.

  • 4 mil polyethylene construction

VCI formulations may be intended for particular types of metal. Confirm that the selected tubing is compatible with the metal being packaged and the anticipated shipping or storage conditions.
