Understanding VCI Paper for Metal Protection

VCI paper is a specialized packaging material designed to help protect metal components from rust, corrosion, and oxidation during storage and transportation. VCI stands for Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor, referring to corrosion-inhibiting compounds incorporated into the paper.

Inside an enclosed package, these compounds release protective vapors that settle on exposed metal surfaces. The resulting molecular layer helps interrupt the corrosion process without requiring the metal to be coated with traditional rust-preventive oils or greases.

Key benefits of VCI paper include:

  • Clean Corrosion Protection: Helps protect suitable metals without applying messy oils or grease.
  • Easy Application: Wrap components or place sheets inside an enclosed package.
  • Protection for Detailed Parts: VCI vapors can reach recessed areas and complex surfaces within the package.
  • Packaging Versatility: Available in rolls and pre-cut sheets for parts of different shapes and sizes.
  • Reduced Preparation: Properly protected parts generally require less cleanup than components coated with oily rust preventatives.

How to Use VCI Paper Effectively

VCI paper performs best when the metal is clean, dry, and enclosed with the treated paper. For maximum protection:

  1. Clean and Dry the Metal: Remove moisture, dirt, fingerprints, and corrosion-producing residues before packaging.
  2. Select the Correct VCI Type: Match the paper formulation to the metal or combination of metals being protected.
  3. Position the Paper Properly: Wrap the component or place sufficient VCI paper inside the package.
  4. Create an Enclosed Environment: Close the bag, carton liner, or wrapping securely to retain the protective vapor.
  5. Limit Repeated Opening: Frequently opening the package can allow the protective vapor concentration to escape.

A general guideline is approximately one square foot of VCI paper for each cubic foot of enclosed packaging space. Actual requirements can vary based on the metal, package design, storage duration, and environmental conditions.

Explore Our VCI Paper Rolls and Sheets

Packaging HERO® offers VCI paper in continuous rolls and convenient pre-cut sheets. Rolls allow users to cut material for components of different dimensions, while sheets provide consistent sizing for repetitive packaging operations.

Available VCI paper types include:

  • Industrial VCI Paper: General-purpose corrosion protection for compatible metal parts during storage and shipment.
  • Waxed Industrial VCI Paper: Combines VCI protection with a waxed construction for applications requiring additional resistance to moisture and handling conditions.
  • Multi-Metal VCI Paper: Formulated for packages containing combinations of metals such as zinc, copper, iron, aluminum, and steel.
  • Heavy-Duty VCI Paper: Designed for more demanding or longer-term protection of compatible ferrous metals such as iron and steel.
  • Military-Specification VCI Paper: Nitrate-free paper listed as meeting MIL-PRF-3420H and recommended for suitable applications involving nickel.

Choosing Between Rolls and Pre-Cut Sheets

  • VCI Paper Rolls: A flexible choice for wrapping products with varying dimensions or creating custom-size protective sheets.
  • Pre-Cut VCI Sheets: Ideal for repetitive packaging lines, layer separation, small components, and consistent placement inside containers.
  • Heavier Basis Weights: Provide greater physical durability for components that require more robust wrapping material.
  • Waxed Options: Offer additional barrier properties for packaging environments where moisture exposure is a concern.

Selecting the Correct VCI Formulation

VCI papers are not automatically compatible with every metal or application. Identify all metals in the package—including plated surfaces, alloys, and mixed-metal assemblies—before selecting a product. Packaging materials, cleaners, wood, adhesives, and other chemicals inside the package may also affect corrosion protection.

Important: Confirm product compatibility, protection duration, storage conditions, and packaging requirements before use. For military, export, or customer-controlled applications, verify the required specification and request supporting documentation for the specific product being purchased.
