1. Define the product's allowable temperature range. The package should be designed around the product requirement, not simply around the words cold or insulated.

2. Define shipment duration and environment. Transit time, season, lane, ambient extremes, delays, and carrier handling affect the required insulation and refrigerant.

3. Match insulation and coolant to the packout. Foam containers, thermal liners, reflective materials, cold packs, and other components behave differently.

4. Validate the complete package. Temperature-sensitive shipments should be tested with the actual product, quantity, refrigerant, insulation, carton, route, and expected duration.

Insulation slows heat transfer; it does not create cold. Cold packs or other refrigerants absorb heat, while the product mass, void space, insulation thickness, carton, placement, and ambient environment determine how quickly the package changes temperature.
