Use the Printed Shipping Description Only When It Matches the Shipment

N.O.S. means “not otherwise specified.” It is part of certain proper shipping names in the Hazardous Materials Table and should not be added to a package simply because the material falls into a broad hazard family. The shipper must first determine the proper shipping name and classification.

Lithium battery transportation rules are especially detailed and can vary with battery type, watt-hour or lithium content, packaging configuration, state of charge, quantity and mode of transportation. A stock “Lithium Ion Batteries” or “Lithium Metal Batteries” label should therefore be used only when it matches the current marking or labeling requirement for the shipment.

For standard hazard diamonds such as Flammable Liquid, Corrosive or Toxic, use DOT Hazard Labels.
