Freezer Paper for Wrapped Frozen Foods

Freezer paper combines a paper exterior with a moisture-resistant polyethylene-coated side. Wrapped against the food, that coating helps limit moisture loss and outside moisture exposure, while the paper side provides strength, folds cleanly and accepts labels or written identification.

Build a Close, Secure Wrap

Choose a sheet or roll width that provides enough material to fold tightly around the product and overlap at the final seam. Sheets support consistent portions and faster repetitive wrapping. Rolls make it easier to cut a suitable length for mixed cuts, bulk packs or irregular items. Heavier paper can provide better handling strength around bone-in or sharp-edged products, although guards or an additional protective layer may still be needed at puncture points.

Place the coated side toward the food unless the product instructions specify otherwise. Press out excess air, fold the paper closely and secure the package with tape intended for freezer conditions. Mark the contents and packing date on the paper side before storage. The quality of the wrap matters: gaps, loose folds and punctures reduce the protection the material can provide.

Confirm Contact and Storage Requirements

Use only freezer paper documented for the intended direct-food-contact conditions. Storage life depends on the food, preparation, freezer temperature, wrap quality and handling; the paper alone does not establish a universal storage period. Freezer paper is also not a heat-sealable pouch or an airtight package, so choose a purpose-built bag or film when the process requires a sealed barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which side of freezer paper faces the food?

The coated side generally faces the food to provide moisture resistance; follow the exact product instructions.

Is freezer paper the same as butcher paper?

No. Freezer paper has a coated side for moisture resistance, while butcher paper is generally uncoated and breathable.

Can freezer paper be heat sealed?

Standard freezer paper is folded and taped, not treated as a heat-sealable package. Use a compatible sealing material when a sealed barrier is required.

How long will food keep in freezer paper?

There is no single period for every food. Follow food-safety guidance and account for freezer temperature, product preparation and wrap integrity.
