Rubber Bands

Rubber-band size numbers are shorthand, so use the listed flat length and width when comparing options. Flat length is measured with the band laid straight and unstretched. The object shape and circumference determine how far the band must extend, while width influences contact area and how concentrated the force feels on the bundle.

Trial more than one size when dimensions vary. A band stretched close to its limit can be difficult to apply, create excessive pressure or fail early. An oversized band may not hold the bundle securely. Check crush-sensitive cartons, printed surfaces, sharp corners and delicate finishes for marking or deformation.

Heat, sunlight, ozone, chemicals and repeated stretching can change rubber performance. Store bands away from avoidable heat and direct light, rotate inventory and inspect before reuse. Discard bands that are cracked, sticky, permanently elongated, cut or contaminated rather than doubling them to compensate for damage.

Control the band during application and removal to reduce snapback toward the face or hands. Rubber bands are not load restraints, lifting devices or safety ties, and they should not be placed where failure could release a hazardous item. Evaluate latex or material-sensitivity requirements under the organization’s safety process.
