Getting the dimensions right is important when matching a folding carton or mailer to a product, replacing an existing package, or comparing carton styles.

Unlike a standard corrugated shipping box, folding cartons and some mailer styles are often easiest to measure while opened flat. The score lines show where the carton folds and help identify the finished dimensions.

How to Measure a Folding Carton

Measure from the center of one score line to the center of the next score line. This helps account for the folds that create the finished carton panels.

For many folding-carton styles:

• Length is the longer panel dimension across the carton opening.
• Width is the shorter panel dimension across the opening.
• Depth is the distance from the top of the carton to the bottom when assembled.

Because folding-carton styles can vary, use the score layout and finished carton orientation to confirm which panel represents each dimension.

Why Measure From Score Line to Score Line?

The score lines define where the paperboard or corrugated material folds to create the finished carton.

Measuring from score center to score center provides a better representation of the finished panel dimension than measuring from the outside edges of the flat blank.

The blank itself also includes flaps, glue areas, and closure panels that are not part of the finished usable interior dimensions.

How to Measure a Flat Mailer

Flat mailers are commonly described with two primary dimensions:

Width × Depth

• Width is the dimension across the opening.
• Depth is the distance from the opening toward the bottom of the mailer.

If the mailer has a flap or closure, do not automatically include the flap in the usable depth. The listed dimensions should represent the interior area available to the product.

Common Measuring Mistakes

• Measuring the entire flat blank: Flaps and glue tabs are not part of the finished usable dimensions.
• Measuring edge to edge instead of score to score: This can create small dimensional errors.
• Including the closure flap in usable depth: The closure area may not be available to the product.
• Assuming every carton style uses the same orientation: Confirm the finished package style before assigning length, width, and depth.
• Ignoring product thickness: A flat product may still require additional depth or clearance once inserted.
