Parcel Handles for Compatible Tied Packages

Parcel handles create a hand grip on packages secured with compatible twine, cord or another approved tying method. The handle is one part of the carrying arrangement: package construction, tie routing, attachment points and carried weight must work together. Choose and test the full package rather than treating the handle as a load rating.

Build the Handle Around the Package

Start with the carton or wrapped parcel and the tying material already approved for it. The tie should remain the primary securement and should not cut into, crush or slip around the package when a person lifts by the grip. Confirm that the handle accepts the selected twine or cord without forcing an improvised attachment.

Allow enough clearance for the intended hand size and gloves. Position the grip so the parcel balances during a normal carry and does not rotate unexpectedly. If the contents can shift, test the package at the least favorable center of gravity as well as its typical packed condition.

Test the Completed Carrying Arrangement

Evaluate the handle with the actual carton, contents, tie pattern and expected carry distance. Look for handle deformation, tie abrasion, loosening, torn carton edges and uncomfortable pressure on the hand. Repeat the evaluation after normal storage or environmental exposure if those conditions may affect the package or tying material.

A parcel handle is a carrying aid, not lifting-rated hardware. Do not use it for overhead lifting, suspended loads, fall protection or material-handling machinery unless the completed system is specifically documented for that purpose. Inspect the handle and tied package before carrying, and replace any damaged component rather than retying around a defect.
