The smaller No. 5 format measures 4 3/4 by 2 3/8 inches, while the larger No. 8 format measures 6 1/4 by 3 1/8 inches. Allow room for every required instruction, identifier, date and responsible-person field. A larger tag can improve readability when the message must be seen from farther away or contains multiple lines.

Use background color within a documented visual system and repeat the meaning in words. Red, yellow or green may suggest familiar status conventions, but color alone does not define the operating rule. Confirm adequate contrast between the background, writing instrument and message under the lighting where the tag will be read.

Write or print the message first, let the marking dry, remove the liner and press the clear layer over the information. Trial the intended pen or marker because ink adhesion and drying time vary. Smooth the overlay from one edge to the other to limit trapped air, folds or contamination that could reduce readability.

The reinforced metal eyelet supports attachment to a compatible opening, but the fastener still needs to be selected separately. Evaluate sharp edges, snagging, corrosion and contact with moving equipment. A self-laminating tag protects its message; it does not lock out equipment, authorize operation or replace a required safety procedure, inspection record or permanent equipment label.
