Wire offers a formed metal attachment where its gauge and routing suit the job. These methods should not be substituted without checking fit and risk.

Measure the complete attachment path rather than the straight-line distance between two points. Leave enough length to install and read the tag without excessive slack. Confirm that the fastener passes through the eyelet or hole without tearing the tag, and avoid routing across sharp edges or moving parts.

Consider whether the fastener can scratch a finish, snag clothing, corrode, transfer contamination or leave a sharp end. Define how workers remove it and where discarded pieces go. Elastic should not be stretched beyond its intended use, and wire should be cut only with a suitable tool while the free end is controlled.

A tag fastener holds identification; it is not a security seal, load restraint or lifting device. Test the complete tag-and-fastener combination through expected handling, storage and exposure. Replace any component that is frayed, permanently stretched, corroded, kinked or unable to retain the tag.
