Do Not Stack Labels for Load and Handling Restrictions

Do not stack labels communicate restrictions such as “Do Not Double Stack,” “Do Not Top Load,” “Do Not Crush” and “Do Not Break Stretch Wrap.” The correct message depends on the prohibited action, because stacking, top loading, compression and unitization failures create different risks.

State the Restriction Precisely

Use “Do Not Double Stack” when another pallet or unit must not be placed above the load. Choose “Do Not Top Load” when freight should not be placed on top, and “Do Not Crush” when compression is the central concern. Messages about stretch film, shrink film or skid breakdown address unit integrity rather than vertical load capacity.

For affirmative placement directions such as “Top Load Only” or “No Top Freight,” review top-load labels. Use the same wording throughout purchase orders, bills of lading and warehouse instructions so the label reinforces a consistent process.

Support the Label With Packaging and Load Control

Place the restriction where forklift operators, dock teams and carriers can see it before moving or positioning the load. Larger fluorescent labels improve visibility on pallets, while smaller labels may suit individual cartons. Apply to clean, dry surfaces and avoid locations hidden by corner boards, straps or shipping documents.

A printed restriction does not increase stacking strength or prevent another unit from being placed above the shipment. Use appropriate cartons, pallets, load stabilization, cones or other approved physical controls when the risk warrants them, and confirm carrier handling requirements before shipping.

What is the difference between “Do Not Stack” and “Do Not Top Load”?

Both limit overhead freight, but use the exact phrase recognized in your warehouse and carrier instructions.

Can I use a label instead of a pallet cone?

Only if the approved shipping procedure permits it. Higher-risk loads may need a visible physical deterrent as well.

Where should the labels go on a pallet?

Place them on multiple visible faces without covering barcodes, addresses or required marks.

Does the label guarantee the restriction will be followed?
