How to Choose Product Cushioning

1. Identify the main risk. Movement, impact, abrasion, surface marking, compression, moisture, static, and corrosion require different protective strategies.

2. Match the material to the product surface. Soft foam and paper can help separate delicate finishes, while air-cell materials and thicker foam add different cushioning behavior.

3. Control movement inside the carton. Cushioning should support the product and limit excessive movement without compressing it so tightly that the protection is defeated.

4. Test the complete package. Box strength, product weight, drop exposure, void space, cushioning placement, closure, and distribution conditions all affect performance.

Cushioning and Void Fill Are Related but Not Identical

Void fill occupies open space so a product does not migrate freely inside a carton. Cushioning is selected to manage contact, shock, vibration, abrasion, or compression around the product. Some materials can do both jobs, but the package should be designed around the actual risk rather than assuming any material that fills space provides the same level of protection.

Use product geometry to guide the format. Rolls are flexible for wrapping and lining. Pouches and bags speed repeat packing. Sheets create flat separation layers. Loose fill flows around irregular shapes. Foam corners protect selected edges and corners.
