Barcode and variable-data printing depends on a compatible system of printer, label, ribbon when required, software and application surface. Available families include roll and fanfold thermal-transfer labels, thermal-transfer ribbons and direct-thermal labels. Select the printing technology before narrowing dimensions or adhesive. Thermal-transfer printers use a ribbon to transfer the image onto compatible label stock. Direct-thermal labels create the image through heat-sensitive material and do not use a separate ribbon. Fanfold labels feed from a stack rather than a roll, which changes storage, printer loading and media-path requirements. For thermal transfer, match ribbon width, length, formulation, ink side and core to the printer and face stock. Wax, wax-resin and resin formulations serve different durability and substrate needs. Darkness, printhead condition, ribbon wrinkles, face stock, quiet zones, curvature, moisture, heat, sunlight and abrasion can affect readability.
