Special Handling Labels for Shipping and Warehouse Workflows

Special handling labels communicate operational messages that fall outside common fragile or orientation wording. Options cover heavy items, sharp contents, partial cases, repacks, customer pickup, expedited orders, export routing, skid counts and other workflow instructions. Select the message from the action the next handler must take.

Use One Clear Message for One Action

Choose “Caution—Heavy” or “Heavy End” to identify a manual-handling concern, and “Sharp Objects Inside” when opening or handling requires additional care. “Partial Case,” “Repack” and “Additional Parts Inside” support inventory accuracy. Routing labels such as “Customer Pick Up,” “Expedite,” “Export” and “International” help separate orders within an established process.

When the primary concern is inspection, opening or receiving documentation, compare receiving stickers. Avoid stacking several vague messages on one surface; prioritize the instruction that changes what the next person should do.

Connect the Label to the Operating Procedure

Define who applies each label, at what stage and what downstream action it triggers. Blank fields such as “Skid __ of __” or “Attention ___” should be completed legibly before the unit leaves the station. Color can support sorting, but the printed message should remain the controlling information.

A “Heavy,” “Export,” “International,” “C.O.D.” or “Expedite” label does not establish weight limits, customs status, payment terms, service level or regulatory compliance. Keep required documents, carrier services, equipment and employee training in place; use the label as visible reinforcement.

Special Handling Labels FAQs

How do I choose among special handling messages?

Start with the specific action or hazard the next handler must recognize, then match the exact printed wording.

Can color alone define the workflow?

It can assist sorting, but retain clear text and a documented color key for consistent interpretation.

Does an export label satisfy shipping requirements?

No. It identifies workflow intent but does not replace documents, classification or carrier and customs requirements.

Where should special handling labels be applied?

Place them on clean, visible surfaces near the relevant handling point without blocking shipment data.
