Polypropylene Strapping for Hand and Machine Application

Polypropylene strapping is divided by application method: hand-grade products for manual tensioning and joining, and machine-grade products engineered for compatible strapping equipment. Both are lightweight nonmetallic choices, but coil core, width, thickness, feed behavior and joint method differ. Choose the operating process before selecting a coil.

Separate Hand Grade from Machine Grade

Hand-grade coils are commonly used with manual tensioners and compatible seals, buckles or tools. Listed widths include 7/16, 1/2 and 5/8 inch, with 16 by 6-inch cores common and an 8 by 8-inch option represented. Machine-grade coils include 1/4-, 3/8- and 1/2-inch widths and 8 by 8 or 9 by 8-inch cores.

A coil that physically fits a dispenser may still be wrong for the tensioner, sealer or machine. Compare exact width, thickness, core and joint method. For equipment use, also verify feed path, weld or seal settings and manufacturer-approved material specifications.

Validate the Finished Strap Pattern

Polypropylene can elongate under load, which may be useful for selected cartons and bundles but can also allow tension loss when a load settles. Test the actual package over the expected storage and transit period. Add edge protection where tension can crush corrugated corners or contact the product.

Do not translate strap color, coil length or thickness into a universal strength rating. Use exact product documentation and a validated securement method. Train operators to stand clear of recoil, cut tensioned strap with suitable tools and keep coils controlled on a dispenser. Polypropylene strapping is not a lifting sling.
