Different Types of Packing Tape and When to Use Them

When it comes to packaging, no package is ever complete without the right tape! In the packaging industry, there are so many different types of tape all with different purposes and for different needs! We’re going to break down everything you need to know about the 3 main kinds of packaging tape and how/when to use them! 

Pressure-Sensitive/Water-Activated Tapes 

Pressure-sensitive tape is exactly how it sounds. This tape requires application pressure in order to adhere to the box! Think of it as if you were wiping down the box with your hand. When you roll out the tape, you must press it down in order for it to be secure on the box. This kind of tape includes hot melt and acrylic! Hot melt tape exudes a higher amount of adhesion than other kinds of tape. It is mostly used for overstuffed boxes and cartons and packages that contain a high temperature of recycled content anywhere from 32-104 degrees Fahrenheit.

Now, water-activated tape is also a carton sealing tape, but is a starch-based adhesive. It’s activated by water through the dispenser that feeds the tape and moistens it as it’s being distributed. This creates an extremely powerful bond and reduces any risks of theft or damage!

Strapping Tapes

Strapping tapes are different from pressure-sensitive tapes because they have what’s called fiberglass filaments constructed into them. With strapping tape you can see what looks like small grooves on the upside. Strapping tape is most suited for large bundling and unitizing pallets and is most resistant to tears and breakage!
