Do not choose by mil first. Film thickness matters, but a thick flat bag is still the wrong shape if the product really needs a gusset, and a heavy-duty general-purpose bag does not replace a specialty construction when the product has specific static, corrosion or moisture requirements.

How to Size a Poly Bag
Measure the product after you know how it will actually be packed. A product's flat footprint is not always enough because thickness, irregular shapes and closure requirements use bag space.
Flat products
Choose a bag wide enough for the product to enter without excessive stretching and long enough to contain the product plus the required closure area.
Thick products
Product thickness uses part of the available bag width and length. Test the actual packed item rather than matching the bag directly to the product's flat width and height.
Gusseted bags
Include the gusset in your fit calculation. The expandable portion creates depth around the product, so evaluate the bag in its filled shape.
Reclosable and resealable bags
Keep contents below the closure area. Overfilling a bag into the zipper track or adhesive flap can interfere with the way the closure works.

Weight Is Only Part of the Durability Question
A relatively light product can still be difficult to bag if it has sharp corners, exposed hardware or a small area that concentrates pressure against the film.
Before increasing film thickness, look at how the product contacts the bag. A cap, separator, wrap, different orientation or different bag style may solve the problem more effectively.

What Does PCR Mean in a Poly Bag?
PCR means post-consumer recycled content. It describes material recovered after use and incorporated into a new product.
PCR content and recyclability are different questions. A bag can contain recycled material without that automatically telling you whether the finished package will be accepted by a particular recycling program.
