Choose wording that matches the packed item and the instruction the next handler needs. A Fragile message is different from Glass, Liquid, Do Not Stack, Top Load Only or Keep From Freezing. Avoid placing several conflicting labels on one surface, and remove or cover obsolete messages before a carton is reused.

Use bilingual or internationally recognized formats when the shipping route and workforce require them. For regulated marks, choose from the shipment classification and applicable transport rules, not visual similarity. Confirm label dimensions, colors, durability and placement requirements against the governing instruction for the complete package.

Apply labels to a clean, dry, compatible surface where they remain visible after palletizing and documentation is added. Avoid carton seams, tape edges, corners and highly textured areas that prevent full adhesive contact. Test adhesion at the application and service temperatures when cold, heat or moisture may be involved.

A label communicates but does not cushion contents, control temperature, prevent stacking or guarantee carrier handling. Build the needed protection into the package and train employees on the message. If a label supports receiving or production, connect it to the operating record so workers can verify the item and required next step.
